THA is a successful surgery globally due to continuous advances in technology and products. Product innovation has been focused on four areas over the years.
Improvements in the mechanical design of acetabular and femoral components have increased the survivability of hip replacement implants. Preoperative planning allows the surgeon to select acetabular and femoral component sizes personalized to a patient’s anatomy. Digital tools are available for pelvic tilt analysis, leg length and offset calculations. Preoperative planning systems allow surgeons to visualize potential impingements and visualize the final stem position.
No system exists today to monitor microcrack generation in the femur to predict fracture risk level in real-time during THA. Intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures and undetected intraoperative fractures that result in early revisions are problems still to be solved. Solving those problems will drive improvement of the global revision THA rate that has plateaued at >8% in recent years.
